Mossley Town Council had responded to complaints about fly tipping hotspots in the town by asking residents to nominate cleanup sites. Allotment holders at Fox Platt asked for help in arranging a cleanup morning to shift the piles of rubbish dumped over the bank that borders the plots.
The clean up took place last sunny Sunday morning with plot holders, town councillors and local residents working together. In the space of two hours they cleared old video players, carpet, pots of paint and other degrading pieces of junk.
However, plot holders went further. Winning a Town Council grant, they have planned to plant the perimeter of the site with shrubbery and place a bench overlooking the old fly tipping area. Their intention is to change fly tippers view of the local area and deterring further problems.
Carolyn, an allotment committee member commented how:
“we saw the initiative as a great opportunity to do several things; clear the site, build community relations and to make the area more attractive. Both the initiative and the grant will help us to achieve these aims”.
