Are you able to help young people develop two pieces of music over the summer holidays?
This is an exiting project for an imaginative approach to creating something special that young people can be proud of.
We need a mentor who can motivate a group of youngsters from Mossley to present two short unique pieces as part of the celebration in September.
The style can be as funky as you like, involve accomplished musicians and beginners, create work from current pop genres or invent a style that’s entirely new.
We will pay for an imaginative individual to devise a theme and to transform it with the young people to be performed at the George Lawton Hall and Mossley Hall. This is funded by the Youth Opportunities Fund for the session work with the group to mentor them and to support two performances on that weekend with a follow up showcase.
Arts and Music: Background
The Twinning Committee want to see this as a special weekend to mark the 40th anniversary of the relationship.
Over the years there have been many visits both ways with involvement from organisations like the Mossley cyclists, brass bands, MAODS and schools in the past as well as football.
The activities have been more limited in recent years due to fewer “twinners” generally in the twinning group and greater difficulties with either the regulations around young people’s protection and the reduction in school involvement.
The MIFAM was an attempt to celebrate twinning with art by spreading the word and looking to new people and take part, at least on home soil. We believe that there will be an opportunity for us to attend events in our partner towns in future and take some art and music with us.
The September 2012 Visit to Mossley
We wish to ensure that there is a great experience for the visitors and Mossleyites around that weekend and we have some visits and social events planned.
We want to see young people involved in art and music to support this event.
The arts part of this is being dealt with separately but integration of the arts project and this music section is entirely possible.
The Music Brief
We need to;
- Create two pieces. One for Saturday evening at GLH and the other for Sunday lunchtime in the garden at Mossley Hall outdoors or under a tent). They may be linked or themed together.
- The young people involved in each can be different or mixed but we would like as many as practical to take part.
- The opportunity for further performance in public should be identified apart from the above so it is showcased to a wider audience.
- The theme is open but the comments in 2-6 above are relevant here.
- Instruments are open to choice but should have a skill base or significant aspect of personal legacy to the young person as an experience.
We are not expecting to create concert musicians but to look at how music may be adapted, merged and expressed in ways which will encourage young people participate and be proud of what they have done.
NB the Drum theme for the event in the George Lawton Hall at MIFAM was simple and stunning. This has had a legacy at the youth base now.
Overall
The result can be a cooperation of visual and musical art.
The age group can be 11-18 or as advised by the craft mentor in each case.
The participants can come from existing groups especially if it (a) enhances their experience or (b) encourages young people to access arts and music with that group into the future.
The funding for this comes from the Youth Opportunities Fund at Tameside MBC. It was submitted by young people from the Mossley Youth Base and it is essentially their project (it was approved by young people as part of the process). Therefore all the planning needs to take account of significant engagement via Maurice Chadwick at the Base (01457 834828)
Ideas need to be with the author (as below) by 5pm Monday 23rd July
It is expected that the work and preparation for this will take place during the August period and be ready for the weekend of 7-9th September.
Finally, the total budget is £2,000 for both elements, including fees, materials and final presentation. This may not be equally split which at the discretion of the Twinning Committee in discussion with the proposer. Their decision is final.
